An "oops" will not cover it, nor will a simple informant. You will need to fully explain your situation and reasoning as well as any grounds of note before you take any action. An acceptation to the rule of law, assuming what you have presented is notable, will be than discussed by the town officials before any sanctioning can be made. This can be a very quick process, so don't feel you should skip the legal channels in the name of haste, as failure to alert me will mean a lengthy investigation and some degree of punitive response. Nor will simply telling me your intentions clear you to do anything you desire.
Additionally, this all of course is not limited to murder.

Yes, this is a great example for why he was the perfect candidate for this job. I am happy to know murder, a high crimes is sometimes ok.
